Naomi & Tracey

This picture was taken just after I was diagnosed with CML, a deadly and incurable leukemia. As you can see, I do not look like a stereotypical cancer patient. I am young, have always been in good health, thin, a vegetarian, never smoked or took drugs, I exercised, always had yearly health check ups, yada, yada. It was such a shock, because I never felt sick. The leukemia was discovered after a routine blood draw. My normal life as a mommy and wife changed in an eyeblink. I was whisked away from my babies and family and quarentined in a cancer ward for a week. It was terriflying. I went from a healthy, happy, young, carefree, mommy to a very sick person with a deadly disease.

I learned very quickly cancer is sneaky and can happen to anyone. Cancer does not discriminate. It can strike a healthy young person as easily as a child or the elderly. Lifestyle or eating habits have very little to do with it. I cannot say that my life after diagnosis has been easy. I have two little toddlers. The cost of this disease has been heavy in all ways imaginable. It makes me so sad that my daughter has never known me well. She was just a baby when I was diagnosed. I hope that one day she will know me as completely cured.

Right now, I pray that the oral therapy I receive keeps the cancer from progressing. Sadly, chemotherapy and radiation are not successful with this type of leukemia. A bone marrow transplant will be my only hope if my condition worsens. Survival after such a procedure is not great. And it undoubtedly will leave me with life-long health problems. I don't want to die from this leukemia or any of it's related issues (of which there are many). My greatest wish is to see my children grow up and grow very old with my husband. Every day I am alive, and living with the ones I love most, is a blessing. It has been 18 months since my diagnosis. I pray to make it past the five-year mark. My children need me. They are too little to lose their mommy.

Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health: Birth Through Age Six

How the new science of "metabolic programming" can help you:

Maximize your baby's IQ and development

Prevent allergies and obesity

Prevent or cure picky eating

Teach your child to enjoy healthy foods

Protect against family health problems

AND make mealtimes a pleasure for you and your child!

In this groundbreaking book, two leading pediatric nutritionists--and experienced parents!--introduce exciting new research into "metabolic programming" and make it accessible and practical for every busy parent. They explain:

How the foods you choose can optimize your baby's future development, IQ bone strength, and immunity

The eight key nutrients to focus on

Scientifically based "smart strategies" for working with your child's inborn instincts to build healthy eating habits

Food solutions for common problems--including colic, constipation, poor sleep, and hyperactivity

How to prevent or deal with food allergies or obesity

Easy ways to adapt family meals for kids--with menus and portion sizes for every stage from birth through age six, plus essential tips for food safety

What's more, you can teach your child to enjoy these healthy foods and banish food battles and picky eating forever.

This book tastes great and it's good for you, too. Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health: Birth Through Age Six is based on the principle of "metabolic programming," the scientifically rooted idea that foods eaten in early childhood directly affect the function of individual cells that control strength, intelligence, the immune system, and other vital functions. Think of it as a convoluted molecular take on the old maxim "You are what you eat." Genetics and other external factors also play a role, of course, but those factors are beyond our control. What goes on the dinner table, however, is not. The point of this book is to help parents teach their kids to like healthful foods, thus getting them into a lifelong habit of eating well and staying healthy.
There is a fair amount of science in this book, but the clear writing and good organization make it go down easy. Particularly helpful are the numerous graphs and boxes that highlight such topics as the best sources of calcium and iron (and why too much iron is dangerous), the differences between breast milk and formula, the eight key nutrients for different ages, and how to identify and even prevent allergies and intolerance to certain foods. The recipes, sample meals, healthy snacks, and tips for dealing with finicky eaters are alone worth the price of the book. Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health is an invaluable guide to ensuring that not only will your kids eat their vegetables, they'll even ask for seconds. --Shawn Carkonen

Grounds For Change (Welcome To Redemption)

Charlie Russell lived with a secret for fourteen years, but now guilt has pushed him to the breaking point. He meets psychologist Dana McClain and feels an instant connection that has nothing to do with his Great Dane, Sugar, spilling coffee down her shirt.

Dana switched to counseling animals because she has a history of becoming too emotionally involved with her clients. She figures she's safe helping Charlie with Sugar's issues, until he reveals his secret and asks for her help. She tries to convince herself it's all about the dog, not the guy, but history has a way of repeating itself.

~*~

Charlie Russell scowled at the bright afternoon sun and wished he hadn't had so much to drink at Rowdy's last night. That, and Sugar's hell-bent-for-leather path down the sidewalk, intensified the headache pounding at his temples. Most days he could keep the ten-month-old
Great Dane in check, but today she was like a souped-up Harley on nitro.

At least she pulled him in the right direction--straight to Carrie Lowell's Coffee to Chai For on Salvation Street. In front of the shop windows, he shifted his sunglasses to the top of his head and squinted inside to see Carrie wiping down the half-dozen or so tables. He raised his hand to knock on the glass, only Sugar jerked his arm, and tugged him toward the door as it opened with the tinkling of a bell.

"Sugar, no. Come here, girl," he admonished, catching his balance after stumbling a step. He managed to stop the dog seconds before she accosted the woman walking out with two iced coffees in her hands. "Sorry."

"No problem."

The woman looked up from Sugar to him with a smile, and Charlie blinked when he saw her startling light green eyes. His attention tracked downward. Long blonde curls rioted about her face and shoulders, perfectly complimenting her white sleeveless blouse with ruffles around the collar and down along the buttons, and a pair of tan slacks.

Dropping his sunglasses back into place to cover his bloodshot eyes, he tried not to stare, but found the combination of wild curls and sophisticated clothes on a beautiful woman with a helluva body impossible to resist.

She sidestepped Sugar in her strappy high heels. He noticed her gaze sweep over him before her smile faded and she walked toward a metallic green Toyota Hybrid parked in front of the shop. He ran a self-conscious hand through his dark hair that desperately needed a trim. Why
the hell hadn't he showered, or at the least combed it before taking Sugar for a walk? Maybe worn something other than a ratty tee shirt, cutoff jeans and holey tennis shoes.

Yeah, so what, he'd brushed his teeth, but he should've shaved, too. Not that she'd look twice at him anyway, but still, it might have kept him from feeling like a total loser.

He turned back to the coffee shop and saw Carrie hold up a hand to let him know she'd be out in a minute.Anticipation for the reviving cup of French Roast she'd bring out made his mouth water almost as much as the woman who'd given him the visual brush-off.

"Excuse me?"

The feminine voice spun Charlie around on his heel to see the beautiful blonde standing by her car.She lifted the iced coffees, and with another smile, asked, "Would you mind getting my door?"

His heart skipped a beat."Of course."

He moved forward, but remembered Sugar about three seconds too late. She shoved her large black nose under the woman's hands in an excited demand for attention. The woman's fingers clenched on the plastic cups as she gasped in surprise and both lids on her coffees popped clear off. Charlie pulled on the leash, but watched helplessly as one cup dumped down the front of her shirt and the other spilled along the length of her right thigh.

ground zero

ground zero

The term ground zero (sometimes also known as surface zero[1] as distinguished from zero point[2]) describes the point on the Earth's surface closest to a detonation.[3] In the case of an explosion above the ground, ground zero refers to the point on the ground directly below the detonation (see hypocenter).

The term has often been associated with nuclear explosions and other large bombs, but is also used in relation to earthquakes, epidemics and other disasters to mark the point of the most severe damage or destruction. The term is often re-used for disasters that have a geographic or conceptual epicente

n the United States, especially in the media, "Ground Zero" is generally understood to mean the site of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The phrase was being applied to the World Trade Center site within hours after the towers collapsed. The adoption of this term by the mainstream North American media with reference to the September 11th attacks began as early as 7:47 p.m. (EDT) on that day, when CBS News reporter Jim Axelrod said,
“ Less than four miles behind me is where the Twin Towers stood this morning. But not tonight. Ground Zero, as it's being described, in today's terrorist attacks that have sent aftershocks rippling across the country.[7] ”

The term "Ground Zero" was simultaneously used by NBC News reporter Rehema Ellis when her own report[8] was aired on NBC at around the same time as Jim Axelrod's report on CBS News. She said,
“ We're now just a block away from the World Trade Center and the closer we get to 'ground zero' the harder it is to breathe and to see ”

Rescue workers also used the phrase "The Pile", referring to the pile of rubble that was left after the buildings collapsed

Best Grinding Machine in the World ;)

- Canon 1000D + Canon 50mm 1.8
- This is an old style grinding machine (no electricity required) used to grind wheat, rice, etc., to prepare food like dosas, idllis, chatnis, sweets, spicy mixtures etc.,
- This is hand driven pestle & mortar, the ingredients are put in the bowl (bigger stone) and a small stone with an wooden handle on top is rotated for 5-30mins by hand, frequently even water is mixed to get desired paste
- These are still used in villages and during various ceremonies, specially in India
- It is traditional in various Hindu ceremonies (such as weddings, and upanayanam) to crush turmeric in these mortars
- Food made using these tastes the best in the world, I bet because it is so natural !

Fertile Ground (After Dark Originals)

Emily and Nate Weaver leave the city for the rural comfort of Nate’s ancestral home in the country. Once there, Emily is plagued by horrifying visions and haunted by the ghosts inhabiting their isolated new home. When Nate’s behavior undergoes a strange and fearful metamorphosis, Emily fears she might be the latest target in a murderous tradition.

This sharp, well-crafted entry in the Lionsgate After Dark Originals horror series is a pretty timeless haunted-house movie that sets up a premise and builds with workmanlike tension that's neatly effective in gathering dread and throwing out scares. Nate and Emily are a young New York couple who after experiencing a miscarriage move to an old farmhouse upstate in an effort to heal Emily's psychic trauma and give Nate a place to concentrate on his work as a painter. The place is hardly rundown, but it has a creepy aura that immediately starts to manifest in subtle ways, betraying past events that happened there--none of them very pleasant. An old chest in the attic reveals portrait photographs that display eerie resemblances to Nate and Emily. Various other clues, including newspaper clippings, ancient artifacts, and research done by the absentminded town archivist, also reveal a history of violence that has dogged the house and its previous inhabitants for the past 100-plus years. There's even a decades-old skeleton uncovered in the front yard when the drain-rooter guys send their video camera snake down a clogged sewer pipe. Concurrent with these discoveries, Emily finds out she's pregnant again, an unexpected development that it seems might have something to do with the house itself and the history of mystery that has touched everyone who lived there. The film is divided into chapters that are sometimes a little facile in spelling out the goings on, with headings such as "Starting Over," "Strange Happenings," and "Revelations." There's a touch of the fake-dramatic and an overly ominous portent that hovers over some of the proceedings, but the production design is terrific, the cinematography and editing skillful, and the acting squarely on caliber for the overall tone. Things do get kind of overwrought as the climax approaches: the perfectly cued thunder and lightning builds to an absolute paroxysm of horrific booming and flashing that's timed to the inevitable bouts of screaming. But Fertile Ground is an efficient and satisfying little thriller with just the right touch of natural and supernatural frights and an ending that's pretty genuinely creepy. --Ted Fry
