Diet and Health with Key to the Calories (Annotated)

This is the classic book by Lulu Hunt Peters, A.B., M.D. Ex-Chairman, Public Health Committee. California Federation of Women's Clubs. Los Angeles District

It was the first modern diet book and the first weight-loss guide to become an American bestseller during the 1920s. It remains on the all-time best-seller lists with two million copies sold.

Lulu Hunt Peters was born in Maine, but she got her M.D. and made her home in California, in 1909. Even as a child her weight was a problem and she was always being told that she would outgrow her fatness, but as a grownup she topped out at 220 pounds and managed to lose 70 of those pounds using the system she described in her book.

It remains on the all-time best-seller lists with two million copies sold. Dr Lulu became the best known and best loved female physician in America through her syndicated newspaper columns, with titles like 'A disgrace to be fat', in which she emphasized that three out of four adult Americans were disgracefully overweight. Dr Lulu's writing is relentlessly upbeat and chatty, full of jokey asides and littered with references to characters with pseudonyms such as Ima Gobbler and Mrs Knott Little, all of whom she claims "are friends of mine", adding "perhaps you had better substitute were for are". Satisfied readers are supplied with forms on which to write testimonials in support of her diet.

Like diet promoters of today, she includes testimonials from satisfied followers, and she also describes her own exercise system. She warns against the use of diet drugs, which contained arsenic and mercury in those days, and she advises dieters to get used to unsweetened food and avoid the “coal tar product” Saccharine. However, she goes on to explain how to deal with chocolate binges by adjusting your dinner meal.

This fascinating book is originally published in 1918, represents in digital format by a community of volunteers, provided calorie-counting menus, sample meal plans, advice on exercise and health in general, dialogues involving and the table of contents that you can click to navigate the page you want.

celery

celery

Celery: According to studies conducted by Mayo Clinic, picking low energy density foods can help you control hunger. The energy density refers to the amount of calories in a given volume of a particular food. A candy bar will contain large amounts of calories so it has a high energy density. On the other hand, celery contains fewer calories even in large amounts. In fact, a bowl of celery has a calorie count of only 16. Such foods can work effectively for curbing hunger. Apart from that, the crunchiness and the subtle salty taste also provide satisfaction when dieting.

7:54PM... Chocolate by the Bald Man: Dessert at Max Brenner, finally! Waffles with strawberries and their famous melted chocolate... what a sin! I could feel the calories piling on as I ate, not that I'm a calorie-counting weight-loss, exercise maniac! I enjoy chocolate way too much for that. :)
